Ebola Outbreak: 90,000 People Could Die By December, Scientists Say

According to a study published by the Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal on Friday, October 24, 2014, the current Ebola outbreak could kill 90,000 people in Liberia by December if urgent measures are not implemented.

The study also predicts that a whopping 171,000 could be infected with the disease within that time frame.
According to one of the authors of the study, Alison Galvani.

“Our predictions highlight the rapidly closing window of opportunity for controlling the outbreak and averting a catastrophic toll of new Ebola cases and deaths in the coming months”
Another author, Joseph Lewnard, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation:

“The scale of interventions that are currently being implemented are still paltry in comparison to what we anticipate is needed.”

The study suggests that the outbreak can only be brought under control with the addition of medical facilities, a “fivefold increase” in the detection of new cases and the provision of protective kits for households.

Almost 5000 people have already died from Ebola and the World Health Organization (WHO)has predicted that the number of cases could increase to 10,000 per week by December if efforts to stop the spread of the disease are not intensified.
