Lagos Senate contests: APC, PDP in battle royale

The contest for the Senate and House of Representatives in Lagos State is one that has transfromed the two leading parties in the state into political warriors with both camps formulating strategies to outwit each other.

Interestingly, while many aspirants have come out in the All Progressives Congress, APC in the Lagos West and East Senatorial districts, the shape of the contest in that party in the Lagos Central Senatorial district remains a matter of conjecture.

Matter of conjecture

All eyes are on party leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as to his own aspiration. The seat which is presently occupied by his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu has not as much attracted much interest from the party faithful who out of deference to the wife of the party leader and also in consideration of her own robust representation have not come out to oppose her.

The gist in some sections of the party is that Asiwaju could take the Lagos Central Senatorial ticket as a way of positioning himself for the office of Senate President in the likelihood that the APC forms the majority in the Senate.

Lagos West: APC

Ganiyu Solomon

Senator Ganiyu Solomon occupies the Senate seat but has since thrown his hat into the governorship ring since the party has zoned the seat to Lagos West.

Though the Minority Whip of the Senate maintains that it is either the governorship position or nothing else, insiders are of the view that the recent position of the Oba of Lagos practically shut the door on other aspirants when he endorsed a particular aspirant, in the person of Akinwumi Ambode.

Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire

In the case of the Deputy Governor, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, her second term as deputy governor is no longer plausible with a Christian being proposed as the next governorship candidate of APC in the state. She has, therefore, accepted her fate and looking for an alternative which is the Senate. She is from Alimosho local government area, the biggest in the state.

Alimosho is one of the 10 local government areas that make the Lagos West Senatorial district of the state.

Adeyemi Ikuforiji

Mr Adeyemi Ikuforiji is the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Inspite of his eye on the governorship seat, Ikuforiji is believed to be interested in the Senate, in the event that he loses out at the APC primaries.

Demola Seriki

In Lagos West Senatorial district, former Minister of state for Defence, Alhaji Demola Seriki, has his hat in the ring to succeed the current occupant of the seat, Senator Ganiyu Solomon.

Born and bred on the Lagos Island, the APC chieftain is bent on re-enacting Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi’s deed when he crossed over from Lagos Central to Lagos West to pick the zone’s ticket to the Senate.

Iyabo Obasa

Mrs Regina Iyabo Obasa, until recently, was the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Lagos State.

Obasa is said to be interested in picking the party’s senatorial ticket.

Kamal Bayewu

Alhaji Kamal Bayewu, is the outgoing chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government. Already, a group in the local government area, AJIF Elders Forum, has endorsed Bayewu for Lagos West Senatorial District in the coming general elections.

Lagos East APC

Until recently, his ambition was to become the APC standard bearer but he has since jettisoned the idea. Senator Olugbenga Ashafa is the present occupant of the Lagos Senatorial seat. Party leaders and members have queued behind to represent them in the Senate. For now, Ashafa is alone in the saddle.

Lagos Central

Raji Fashola

The outgoing governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has performed beyond peoples imagination.

Based on this, Fashola is being tipped for the ticket, while Remi Tinubu is being appeased to step down for the former.

Remi Tinubu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu is serving her first term as the lawmaker represent Lagos Central Senatorial District.

Tinubu, who is the Vice Chairman of the Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity.

She is already oiling her political machinery to represent the district in the Senate while external forces are poised to convince her husband (Bola Tinubu) to replace her.

PDP: Ready for battle

Lagos Central: Hakeem Gbajabiamila

Engr. Hakeem Akinola Gbajabiamila, was former Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He has since declared his readiness to wrest the Lagos Central Senatorial District seat from Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Gbajabiamila boosts that he is battle ready to face the Tinubu factor in the forthcoming election.

Lagos West PDP: Moshood Salvador

Moshood Adegoke Salvador is a chieftain of the PDP in Lagos State. He is also former member of the House of Representatives, who vied for the position of National Secretary at the last PDP convention but was asked to step down without reason. Salvador, a delegate to the just concluded National Conference, was the PDP senatorial candidate but was defeated at the polls. He is said to be interested in the race.
